The Seasonal Workers Gathering...

Earlier this month, members of St. George's gathered at the Chuck and Mary Ann Smith's house to host a typical American cook out for all of the seasonal workers who come to York in the summer to work at the various inns, hotels and restaurants.

These students come from the far corners of the globe to spend their summer vacation from their university studies to be housekeepers and laundry workers. They do this to improve their English and to learn about America.

The program, sponsored by the York Diversity Forum, seeks to provide opportunities for these students to meet together, get to know community members, practice conversational English and just have some fun in their time off.

The program also provides bikes  for the workers to use so that they can get around town easily.  A member of the committee also provides maintenance for the bikes -- Thanks, Ted!)  Local churches like ours offer hospitality throughout the summer.

The weather for the picnic was close to perfect, the food was great (burgers, dogs, corn on the cob, and a variety of salads, with ice cream for dessert.)  In addition to the great food,  we offered boat rides, with Captain Thomas Beecher guiding the boaters.

This year, we partnered in the effort with St. Christopher's Roman Catholic Church, our neighbors in York Harbor.   As you can see by these pictures, a good time was had by all!
